Here is a list of update services that appear to be active.  Feel free to cut and paste these into your WordPress settings. And if I missed any good ones, be sure to let me know.

  • http://ping.bitacoras.com

Note: Based on further investigation, I have changed my list of services to only use pingomatic.com. Listing more services runs the risk of appearing to be a spammer.

You don’t have to use all of these services. Um, rather, the more you use, the more strain you put on your server.

Ping just Pingomatic, FeedBurner and Google – Pingomatic pings other sites (I think), and Google & FeedBurner, well you know why ;)

Thanks for pointing this out, Sumesh. I wish I could say that now I completely understand the best approach to this issue, but I don’t. Based on what you said, I went back and reread the WordPress Codex page on Update Services and found it as confusing as I did the first time. No wonder that page is marked as “in need of editing”. But this time I noticed the Codex page has a link to another page of update services for 2008. Perhaps their shorter list is a good compromise between my long list and your suggested short list. Here are the services they recommend:

http://rpc.pingomatic.com
http://www.blogpeople.net/servlet/weblogUpdates
http://bulkfeeds.net/rpc
http://ping.myblog.jp
http://ping.bloggers.jp/rpc/
http://bblog.com/ping.php

Anyone else have an opinion on this?
