Thanks for pointing this out, Sumesh. I wish I could say that now I completely understand the best approach to this issue, but I don't. Based on what you said, I went back and reread the WordPress Codex page on Update Services and found it as confusing as I did the first time. No wonder that page is marked as "in need of editing". But this time I noticed the Codex page has a link to another page of update services for 2008. Perhaps their shorter list is a good compromise between my long list and your suggested short list. Here are the services they recommend:

http://rpc.pingomatic.com
http://www.blogpeople.net/servlet/weblogUpdates
http://bulkfeeds.net/rpc
http://ping.myblog.jp
http://ping.bloggers.jp/rpc/
http://bblog.com/ping.php

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

You don't have to use all of these services. Um, rather, the more you use, the more strain you put on your server.

Ping just Pingomatic, FeedBurner and Google - Pingomatic pings other sites (I think), and Google & FeedBurner, well you know why ;)
